McMillan and Co.

  • BLACK SHED 343 CR-519 Stockton, NJ, 08559 United States (map)

"McMillan" is a musical journey always trying to keep the listener in mind. We love the sense of melody but entwine that within an interesting and challenging arrangement. The band is always improvising to enhance the listener's experience. We hope you enjoy it.

TOM MCMILLAN started piano at an early age and by 12 was playing guitar and bass in area bands doing all the popular songs of the day. Focusing on bass by high school Tom studied music composition and theory at Dickinson College and played in the community orchestra. At this time he delved into the world of jazz and rock/fusion. A self-taught player, Tom has taken influences from many genres of music from BeBop to Electronica and played in a variety of bands and venues in NJ and PA.   He has composed much of the band's current material and continues to strive for new sounds and musical experiences.  He is available for lessons and studio work.

LAURA MCMILLAN is a classically trained singer who found subsequent inspiration in singer songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro, and took original compositions and self-taught piano chops to area bars and coffeehouses.  The vocals she brings to McMillan (the brainchild of Tom McMillan, her musical and life partner) incorporate jazz and gospel.  She also sings with Jersey Transit (a cappella) and Cantus Novus.

ROB LANTER studied at the Berklee College of Music majoring in Composition and guitar. He has scored several independent films, and has produced numerous recordings. In the 1980's, his jazz fusion group Orpheus recorded for Polydor Records and toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada playing clubs, concerts and jazz festivals.  He is also actively composing works for the band and is hard at work engineering tracks for McMillan's upcoming vinyl recording.

TOM HYLAND began playing drums at the age of six, and studied at the Haddonfield Conservatory, participated in many youth orchestras and bands in the Cherry Hill area. While in college, Tom played with sax player Denis DiBlasio, bassist Andy Lalasis, and guest players from Rowan University. He played for decades with guitarist Sonny Troy, as well as vibraphonist Tony Miceli, pianist Jim Ridl, and he regularly entertains residents at The Evergreens retirement facility in Moorestown with many talented musicians, including Larry McKenna, Dylan Taylor, Walt Bibinger, Matt Parrish, Kevin MacConnell, and singers Paul Jost and Michelle Lordi.
