A New Way of Thinking about Gardens, Nature and Ourselves
Black Shed is honored to host one of the world's master gardeners, James Golden, and learn about his recently released book "The View from Federal Twist." James will give a visual presentation and talk about his garden as part of a celebratory evening at Black Shed.
The Garden at Federal Twist Garden, located in Kingwood, New Jersey, is a world-renowned garden in the new perennial style. The garden has been featured internationally on the BBC TV series, “American Gardens”, in the New York Times, the Financial Times of London, the Wall Street Journal, in various magazines such as Gardens Illustrated, Horticulture, Elle Décor, and Better Homes and Gardens, and in several books. Federal Twist is also a featured garden in Noel Kingsbury’s and Claire Takacs’ recent book “Wild,” which is currently on sale at Black Shed.
“The View from Federal Twist” tells the story of the making of the garden from its beginnings in a dark, overgrown, derelict wood. The garden is on an extremely challenging site: the soil is heavy clay, poorly drained and therefore quick death for any plants not naturally suited to it. Part experimental horticulturist and part philosopher, James describes how he listened to the site, made a conscious decision not to improve the land, planted large, competitive plants into rough grass, then observed and intervened only when necessary, as sustainable plant communities evolved.
Born in Mississippi though resident in New York City for most of his life, James was a writer in the corporate world. Nearing retirement, and embarking on what he happily calls la vita nuova, he moved to a property in western New Jersey to make a garden. When he began the garden, he also began a now well-known blog, “The View from Federal Twist”. Fifteen years on, James is a celebrated garden maker and thinker. On visiting Federal Twist for his “American Gardens” TV series, Monty Don, the British TV gardening celebrity, said “after over 50 years of gardening and visiting gardens, it made me rethink what a garden can be and do.”
